The sixth grade classes are also completing a operating with fractions, with a focus on connecting models to more efficient strategies. One area we will continue to work with concerning operations with fractions is distinguishing the context of a word problem and applying an operation and efficient strategy in solving, an idea that leans heavily on a solid foundation and understanding of models and problem solving. We are currently working in a unit on algebra, with a focus on comparing independent and dependent variables in tables and graphs, and using those tables and graphs to generate observations and formulas. Throughout this unit we will also be utilizing graphing calculator apps on the iPads and a version of Excel on the netbooks. The graphing calculator we are using is Desmos, and it is a free app if you are interested in downloading it at home. They also have an online version for the computer.
The majority of students do have at least one opportunity each week to work on math and self assessment grading during the course of the week during x-block, and I encourage all students to make that choice over the course of the week. Over the last trimester I will be focusing heavily on students relating their work to show evidence of movement toward the specific math goal of the day. Not only does this allow students to take ownership of their learning, but at the end of each week I have five pieces of evidence to evaluate student understanding in addition to daily exit questions, allowing me to further tailor learning experinces for each student.
As always, if you have any questions feel free to email.
